American Motor Supply · Used engine warranty
Every engine we ship is backed in writing.
Protected · VIN-matched · Compression-tested · 180 days to 3 years
A used engine is a major decision, so we make the promise simple: 180-day parts coverage included free, extend it to 1 or 3 years at checkout, and you see HD photos of your exact engine and approve them before it ever leaves our facility.
Choose how long you're covered.
Standard coverage is included free with every engine and depends on its model year — newer engines carry longer coverage because their components have aged less. Want more time? Extend to 1 or 3 years at checkout.
Free with every engine
Model year 2001 – 2025 · $0
- Internal engine components covered
- Parts-only coverage, unlimited miles
- Term starts on your invoice date
Older units: 90 days on model years 1991–2000 · 30 days on 1990 or earlier. Your specialist confirms your tier at quote time.
Extended parts warranty
Added at checkout · optional
- Same covered components as standard
- 12-month protection, unlimited miles
- Priority specialist support
Keep maintenance receipts (service every 3,000–5,000 miles) — they validate an extended-plan claim.
Ultimate parts warranty
Added at checkout · maximum protection
- Same covered components as standard
- 36-month protection, unlimited miles
- Dedicated claims support
Keep maintenance receipts (service every 3,000–5,000 miles) — a missing receipt after year one can invalidate a claim.
Six moments that decide your protection.
Warranty terms are really about deadlines. These are the ones that matter — tap any stop to jump to the details.
You see it before it ships.
Every order follows a strict six-step fulfillment process. Nothing leaves our facility until you've seen HD photos of your exact unit and approved them in writing.
Payment authorization
Your order is confirmed, logged and assigned a stock number.
Final quality inspection
Compression / cylinder testing performed on your exact unit.

Dismantling & cleaning
Professionally removed, pressure-washed and prepped for freight.
HD photos shared with you
Sent by text or email for your review — every angle, your stock number visible.

Your written approval
Your go-ahead is recorded before dispatch. This is what releases the order.
Palletized & dispatched
Strapped, wrapped and shipped — typically 3–5 business days in transit.

Full refund if you reject the photos
Review the pre-shipment photos and reject the part before freight dispatch and you receive a full refund — zero cancellation or restocking fees. Your written photo approval is what releases your order. Nothing ships without it.
Cancellations after approval or in transit
Once you've given written photo approval and the carrier has dispatched your shipment, the actual outbound and return freight is non-refundable and is deducted from any refund. Cancelling for any other reason after 24 hours also carries the 25% restocking fee.
Five things every engine warranty includes.
What you're entitled to under the warranty, broken into five operating principles.
30-day installation window
Install within 30 days of the invoice date to keep your return and warranty valid. An engine that sits too long rusts inside.
180-day to 3-year protection
After the 30-day return window closes, your engine stays covered for the full term on your invoice.
Shipping costs covered
We pay the freight — pickup and replacement — whenever your return is approved under warranty.
VIN-matched compatibility
We use your VIN to match the right engine. Even from a different year or model, it fits and works like the original.
Replacements & refunds
Approved claim: we pick up and send a tested replacement of equal grade. No compatible unit within 10 business days — refund. Second verified fault — full refund.
Follow the checklist to keep your warranty valid
Installation must be done by a licensed professional mechanic, following every step in our checklist. Keep every receipt — they're your evidence on any claim.
- Fresh oil, oil filter, thermostat, spark plugs and coolant
- New water pump — required, keep the receipt
- Replace all seals and gaskets before installation
- Flush the cooling system; new radiator if required
- New timing belt on belt-drive engines; timing set correctly
- Clear all trouble codes before and after installation
- Never bypass the radiator or run without proper cooling
- Save every oil-change receipt for the warranty term
Everything Clear. Nothing Hidden.
Five rules every buyer should read before signing for delivery. Plain language, no surprises. Every return needs a written Return Authorization (RMA) from us first.
The 24-hour rule
Cancel within 24 hours of payment for a full refund. You also get a full refund at any point before dispatch if you reject the pre-shipment photos.
After 24 hours we begin preparing your engine for shipment. Cancel after that for any other reason and the following apply:
30-day return window
Tell us in writing about any visible damage, fitment discrepancy or issue within 30 days of purchase, with the unit still uninstalled and in its original delivered condition. We can't take returns after 30 days.
Please note: sending back an engine that arrived in good shape (changed mind, ordered the wrong part, no fault found) counts as a cancelled order — the 25% restocking fee applies and round-trip freight is your responsibility.
Inspect before you sign the BOL
Inspect the crate and unit before signing the carrier's Bill of Lading. The driver must wait while you or your mechanic check for housing cracks, broken ears or bent components. Any damage? Write it on the BOL before you sign:
- Send us photos of the damage and the noted BOL within 48 hours of delivery.
- Concealed transit damage found after the driver leaves must be reported within 48 hours, with photos of the unit and packaging.
Freight carriers reject damage claims on a clean signed BOL — sign without a note and skip the 48-hour report, and transit-damage claims cannot be honored.
The one thing that costs people coverage
Every engine ships with heat tabs: heat-sensitive indicators on the block whose center melts permanently once the engine overheats. They exist to detect overheating — the single most common cause of engine failure after installation.
Inspect the tabs as soon as the engine arrives. If any tab is missing at delivery, report it in writing within 48 hours, before installation. Tabs must stay intact, unmelted and unaltered for the whole warranty period — intact heat tabs are required evidence on every claim.
The unit comes back within 30 days of authorization
If a unit develops a fault and the outcome is a return, it must come back to us within 30 days of the return being authorized. A used engine that sits for months after a fault can't be assessed, reconditioned or put back into service — that's why this is a firm condition.
You are never on this clock for time that belongs to us. The 30 days start only once we've authorized the return and sent you the Bill of Lading; any delay on our side doesn't count against you. We arrange collection, we cover the freight, and we tell you in writing where the 30 days stand.
- Print two copies of the BOL we send and keep them with the unit. The driver takes a printed copy by hand and can't accept it on a phone screen.
- No printed copy on hand = a failed pickup. The carrier's failed-pickup charge is passed on where the instruction was given and not followed.
- While the claim is open keep the unit dry, covered, off the ground, fluids drained and openings sealed. Need it moved or handled differently? Tell us — we'll arrange it at our cost.
- Unsure about anything? Call Speak with Specialist or text +1-859-209-6146 — a specialist, not a queue.
What's in the crate?
Every used engine order ships as a long block plus bolt-on accessories — packaged and sent together. Only the long block is covered; the bolt-ons are free courtesy items.
Long Block
- 01Engine block & heads
- 02Pistons
- 03Crankshaft
- 04Camshaft
- 05Internal lubricated components
- 06Key internal moving parts
Alternator and starter may not come with the engine. The wiring harness can sometimes be cut during dismantling — swap it from your original engine. The water pump will be attached, but it must be replaced with a brand-new one — see below.
Free Bolt-on Accessories
- 01Intake manifold
- 02Exhaust manifold
- 03Water pump
- 04Sensors
- 05Thermostat
- 06Hoses
- 07Seals & gaskets
- 08Timing belt / chain
- 09Spark plugs
- 10Injectors
- 11Flywheel
- 12Oil pan
- 13Distributor
- 14Brackets, etc.
Bolt-on accessories are free courtesy items for installation convenience and transit protection. They are not sold as part of the purchase price and are not covered by the warranty — wear or defects on courtesy accessories do not constitute a defective engine.
The water pump must be replaced with a brand-new one — no exceptions.
A used pump is the most common cause of overheating, and overheating is the most common cause of engine failure after installation. Fitting a new water pump is a condition of your warranty. Keep the receipt — it's required evidence on any claim.
What's covered, and what isn't.
A direct, side-by-side ledger of what falls inside the warranty boundary — and what stays outside it. Everything not listed as covered is, by definition, not covered.
What's covered?
Our warranty covers essential internal components only:
- 01Engine block
- 02Cylinder heads
- 03Pistons
- 04Crankshaft
- 05Camshaft
- 06Key internal moving parts — rods, bearings, valvetrain
Coverage applies to verified internal defects or operational failure in these components within your warranty term, confirmed by a certified mechanic's diagnostic.
What's not covered?
- 01External accessories — sensors, intake/exhaust manifolds, belts, injectors, hoses, brackets, oil pan, etc. — are included for your convenience but not covered.
- 02Coverage is parts only. Labor is excluded unless approved in writing beforehand or purchased separately.
- 03Any misuse or abuse — racing, towing, neglect, improper handling — or damage from incorrect installation, unauthorized or unqualified repairs and modifications.
- 04Existing problems with the vehicle that damage the ordered part void the warranty.
- 05Delays, loss of time, transportation or towing expenses, or any related direct or indirect damages caused by a defect.
- 06Leaks caused by old gaskets, filters or seals.
- 07Mileage discrepancies — mileage is provided to the best of our knowledge; the sale and warranty are based on the unit's tested condition, not exact mileage.
Eight things that void your warranty.
If any of the following occurs, warranty protection is forfeited. Read carefully — this is the part that costs people coverage.
Skipping the pre-installation checklist.
Overheating or low-lubrication damage.
Any repairs or modifications not authorized by us.
Melted, missing or tampered heat tabs — conclusive evidence of overheating; automatic void.
Not returning an authorized unit within 30 days of the return authorization — see Rule 5.
Not replacing the water pump with a brand-new one during installation.
Improper storage before installation — rust, corrosion or exposure damage.
Returning a part without an RMA, in a condition different from how it was delivered, or with missing parts.
Notice · coverage forfeiture. Warranty protection is forfeited the moment any of the eight conditions above occurs — no exceptions, no partial coverage.
