American Motor Supply · Used transmission warranty

Every transmission we ship is backed in writing.

Coverage duration

How long is the warranty?

Standard coverage is included with every transmission and depends on the model year — newer units carry longer terms because their components have aged less. Extend it at checkout for up to 3 years.

Standard protection

Free with every transmission

Included free
180days

On 2000-and-newer model years — at no extra cost.

  • 90 days for 1991–1999 model years
  • 30 days for 1990 and older
  • Parts-only coverage of the internal components
  • The term printed on your invoice controls
Silver protection

Extended parts warranty

Optional
1year

Twice the standard term — add it at checkout or by phone before shipping.

  • Same internal-parts coverage, longer
  • Same specialist claim process
  • Keep routine service records on file
  • Ideal for daily drivers
Gold protection

Ultimate parts warranty

Best value
3years

The longest coverage we offer on any transmission.

  • Six times the standard term
  • Ideal for work trucks and high-mileage use
  • Keep fluid-service records per the manufacturer's schedule
  • Same claim process, same specialist team
i
Extended plans: keep your maintenance records. Silver and Gold plans require proof of routine maintenance — fluid-level checks and any fluid or filter service on the manufacturer's schedule. A missing record after the first year can invalidate a claim.
i
Coverage is parts-only. It replaces the covered unit. Labor, towing, rental, storage, diagnostics and fluid costs are excluded unless a labor protection plan was purchased in writing.

Pre-shipment photo approval

You see it before it ships.

Every order follows a strict 6-step fulfilment process. Nothing leaves our facility until you've seen HD photos of your exact transmission and approved them in writing.

01
Step 1

Payment authorization

Your order is confirmed, logged and matched to your VIN.

02
Step 2

Final quality inspection

Shift testing through every gear and fluid checks on your exact unit.

03
Step 3

Dismantling & cleaning

Professionally removed, cleaned and prepped for freight.

04
Step 4

HD photos shared with you

Sent by text or email for your review — case, pan, converter, tag.

05
Step 5

Your written approval

Your go-ahead is recorded before dispatch. No approval, no shipment.

06
Step 6

Palletizing & freight dispatch

Strapped, wrapped and shipped — typically 3–5 business days in transit.

§ Guarantee · Refund before shipment

100% refund if you reject the photos

If you review the pre-shipment photos and reject the unit before freight dispatch, you receive a 100% full refund — zero cancellation or restocking fees. Your written photo approval is what releases your order for shipping.

§ In transit · After approval

Cancellations after approval or in transit

Once you've given written photo approval and the carrier has dispatched your shipment, the actual outbound and return freight is non-refundable and is deducted from any refund.

Warranty terms

Five things you're entitled to.

What the warranty gives you, broken into five operating principles — and the short checklist that keeps it valid.

Pillar 01 · Window

30-day installation window

Install within 30 days of the invoice date to keep your return and warranty valid. A unit that sits collects moisture — seals dry out and rust starts.

Pillar 02 · Term

180 days to 3 years of protection

After the 30-day return window closes, your transmission is still covered for the full term on your invoice.

Pillar 03 · Freight

Full freight on approved claims

We pay the shipping if your return is approved under warranty — pickup and the replacement's delivery.

Pillar 04 · Fitment

VIN-matched compatibility

We match by your VIN. Even if the unit comes from a different year or model, it fits and works like the original.

Pillar 05 · Recovery

Replacements & refunds

Approved claim → we collect the unit and ship a tested replacement of equal grade. No compatible unit within 10 business days? Refund.

Required · Pre-installation

Follow the checklist to keep your warranty valid.

Installation must be performed by a certified professional, following every step below. Most transmission failures after install come from fluid problems, not the unit — the checklist exists to protect you.

Download pre-installation checklist
Certified professional installer
Flush the cooler & cooler lines
New filter & pan gasket
Fresh manufacturer-spec fluid, correct level
Torque converter fully seated
Clear all ECU / TCU fault codes
Install within 30 days of invoice
Keep every receipt & the signed checklist
Return terms & conditions

What's covered,  and what isn't.

Five clauses every buyer should read before signing for delivery. Each one starts with the short version — the detail sits underneath.

Clause A · Cancellations

Order cancellations

24 hours
In shortCancel free within 24 hours of payment — or at any point before dispatch by rejecting the pre-ship photos.

After 24 hours we begin preparing your transmission for shipment. If you cancel after that for any other reason, the following applies:

  • 25% restocking fee
  • Round-trip freight (actual cost, both directions), if the unit has already shipped
Clause B · Returns

30-day return window

30 days
In shortReport visible damage or a fitment discrepancy in writing within 30 days of purchase — uninstalled, in the condition it arrived.

Every return needs a written Return Authorization (RMA) from us before it ships back — returns without one can't be accepted at our dock. We can't take returns after 30 days from the date of purchase.

Please note: sending back a transmission that arrived in good shape (changed your mind, ordered the wrong part, no fault found) counts as a cancelled order — the 25% restocking fee applies and round-trip freight is your responsibility.

Clause C · Delivery day

Inspect before you sign the BOL

48 hours
In shortCheck the crate and unit before signing. Note damage on the Bill of Lading and send us photos within 48 hours.

The driver must wait while you or your mechanic check for case cracks, broken ears, a damaged pan or bent components.

  • If anything is damaged, write "RECEIVED DAMAGED — [describe it]" on the BOL before signing.
  • Send us photos of the damage and the noted BOL within 48 hours of delivery.
  • Concealed transit damage found after the driver leaves must also be reported within 48 hours, with photos of the unit and the packaging.

Freight carriers reject physical-damage claims on a clean signed BOL. A case cracked or damaged after delivery is not covered under warranty.

In short · strict void conditionMost post-install failures are fluid problems, not the unit. Get the fluid right and keep the receipts.

Clause D · Fluid & installation discipline

To preserve coverage, your certified installer must:

  • Completely flush the cooler and cooler lines before installation.
  • Install a new transmission filter and pan gasket (where applicable).
  • Fill with brand-new, manufacturer-specified fluid to the correct level.
  • Check and clear all ECU / TCU fault codes before the test drive.
  • Keep receipts for the fluid, filter and gasket — required for any claim.
Strict void: damage from low fluid, an incorrect fluid spec or contaminated fluid voids this warranty. Internal torque-converter failure caused by improper seating or installation torque is likewise excluded. These conditions are verifiable on teardown — no claim, return or refund can be honored where they are found.
Clause E · Returning a faulty unit

Approved returns come back within 30 days of the fault

Never on our clock
In shortIf a unit develops a fault and the outcome is a return, it must come back within 30 days of the fault — and any time spent waiting on us never counts against you.

A used transmission that sits for months after a fault can't be assessed, can't be reconditioned and can't be put back into service by anyone. That's why this is a firm condition rather than a preference.

The clock

You can't return a unit until we've authorised it and sent you the Bill of Lading, so any period before that — and any delay of ours after it — is excluded from the 30 days. We tell you in writing where the count stands.

Collection

We arrange the pickup and cover the freight. Print two copies of the BOL and keep them with the unit — the driver takes a paper copy by hand, can't accept a phone screen, and won't wait. A failed pickup caused by a missing printout is charged back.

While the claim is open

Keep the unit dry, covered and off the ground with the fluid and ports sealed — it protects the unit and your claim. Need it moved or handled differently? Tell us and we'll arrange it at our cost.

What ships with your order

What's in the crate?

Every used transmission ships as a core unit plus bolt-on accessories — packaged and sent together. Only one of the two is under warranty.

Simple ruleThe core unit is covered. The bolt-on accessories are free extras for your convenience — they are not.

Core assembly

Core Unit

  1. 01Transmission case & housing
  2. 02Valve body & hydraulic components
  3. 03Torque converter (supplied with automatic units)
  4. 04Planetary gear sets & clutch packs
  5. 05Internal pumps & shafts
  6. 06Key internal moving parts
iThe unit ships shift-tested, with fresh fluid installed for testing before dispatch. At installation you must still flush the cooler and lines, fit a new filter and pan gasket, and set the level with fresh manufacturer-specified fluid. The torque converter is included where supplied by the donor unit.

  1. 01External sensors
  2. 02Solenoids
  3. 03Wiring harnesses & connectors
  4. 04Shift linkages & cables
  5. 05Oil pan
  6. 06Shift levers
  7. 07Mounting brackets & mounts
  8. 08Cooler line fittings
  9. 09Pan gasket & external seals
  10. 10Speed sensors
  11. 11Dipstick / fill tube (where fitted)
  12. 12Bolts, studs & hardware, etc.
iBolt-on accessories are free courtesy items for installation convenience. They aren't sold as part of the purchase price and are not covered — wear or defects on an external accessory don't make the transmission defective. Some may not arrive; a harness may be cut — swap yours over.
Filter, pan gasket & fluid — replace at install, no exceptions. Reusing old fluid or a clogged filter can destroy a perfectly good unit, and it voids coverage. Keep the receipts.
Scope of coverage

What's covered, and what isn't.

A direct, side-by-side ledger of what falls inside the warranty boundary — and what stays outside it. Everything not listed as covered is, by definition, not covered.

Inside the boundary

What's covered?

Our warranty covers the essential internal components only:

  1. 01Transmission case & internal housing
  2. 02Valve body & hydraulic components
  3. 03Torque converter — when supplied with automatic units
  4. 04Planetary gears & gear sets
  5. 05Clutch packs
  6. 06Internal pumps, shafts & key internal moving parts
i

Coverage applies to verified internal mechanical failure of these components within your warranty term, confirmed by a certified mechanic's diagnostic report with fault codes.

Outside the boundary

What's not covered?

  1. 01External accessories — sensors, solenoids, wiring harnesses, shift linkages, coolers and cooler lines, mounts, brackets, oil pan, shift levers — included for convenience, not covered.
  2. 02Labor — coverage is parts-only unless a labor plan was approved in writing or purchased separately.
  3. 03Damage from low fluid, contaminated fluid or the wrong fluid spec, or from skipping the cooler flush, filter or pan gasket.
  4. 04Misuse or abuse — racing, off-road use, towing beyond the factory rating, neglect, improper handling, incorrect installation or unauthorized repairs and modifications.
  5. 05A case cracked or physically damaged after delivery, and torque-converter failure from improper seating or installation torque.
  6. 06Pre-existing vehicle problems that damage the ordered part — these also void the warranty.
  7. 07Consequential costs — delays, loss of time, towing, rental, storage, diagnostics or downtime caused by a defect.
  8. 08Leaks from old gaskets, filters or seals; and electrical faults in sensors, solenoids or modules.
  9. 09Mileage discrepancies — mileage is provided to the best of our knowledge; the sale and warranty rest on the unit's tested condition, not an exact reading.
Voiding conditions

Eight things that voidsyour warranty.

If any of the following occurs, protection is forfeited. Read carefully — this is the part that costs people coverage.

V·01

Skipping the pre-installation checklist

Or no verified installation record from a certified installer.

V·02

Overheating or low-fluid damage

Including missing, damaged or tampered heat tabs where fitted.

V·03

Wrong fluid spec, low level or contaminated fluid

Verifiable on teardown — automatic void.

V·04

No new filter & pan gasket, or no cooler-line flush

The installation prerequisites are mandatory, not optional.

V·05

Repairs, modifications or disassembly not authorized by us

Opening the unit before our inspection ends the claim.

V·06

Improper storage before installation

Rust, corrosion or exposure damage — or not installed within 30 days.

V·07

Not returning a faulty unit within 30 days of the fault

See Clause E — time waiting on us is excluded.

V·08

Returning without an RMA, in a different condition, or with missing parts

Every return needs a written Return Authorization first.

Diagnostics matter. A claim also can't be processed until a certified mechanic's diagnostic report with fault codes has isolated the fault to the transmission itself — comprehensive troubleshooting comes first, teardown never.
